The Henley Passport Index has once again released its much-anticipated global rankings – and for the first time in history, six countries share the top spot for the world’s most powerful passports in 2025. Based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the index ranks passports by the number of destinations their holders can access visa-free or with visa-on-arrival.
2025 Top-Ranked Passports
The following countries tied for #1, offering visa-free access to 194 destinations:
France
Germany
Italy
Japan
Singapore
Spain
This marks a historic moment — especially for European passport holders — showing the increasing strength of European mobility. Asian passports like Japan and Singapore continue to hold strong, maintaining their dominance from previous years.
🇦🇺 Where Does Australia Stand?
Australia has retained a top 10 position, currently tied at #6 with access to 190 destinations. While not at the very top, the Australian passport continues to offer excellent mobility for citizens, reaffirming its global status and appeal
The Biggest Gaps in Passport Power
At the other end of the index:
Afghanistan ranks the lowest, with access to only 28 destinations.
Other countries at the bottom include Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, and Yemen – all with under 35 visa-free destinations.
The “mobility gap” between the most and least powerful passports is now 166 destinations, underscoring stark global inequality in travel freedom.
What This Means for Migrants and Visa Applicants
As a migration agency, we often highlight how obtaining permanent residency or citizenship in countries like Australia can significantly improve your travel freedom and lifestyle opportunities. A powerful passport not only means easier holidays — it can:
Open up business and career opportunities globally
Help avoid lengthy visa application processes
Provide greater security and consular support abroad
Increase access to quality healthcare and education worldwide
Many of our clients aim to eventually obtain Australian citizenship — not only for the benefits within Australia, but also for what the passport represents on the world stage.
